The Trail Since 2006
It began with a spark of inspiration from a few kindred spirits scattered along the Appalachian ridges, mostly in North Carolina and Virginia. Back then, we were virtual friends who—for the most part—never shared a physical porch, but we built a digital one together. Some were writers, some were poets, and some were photographers, each of us finding our way through those early “virtual woods” on the internets.
What follows is a collection of my latest musings (and perhaps a bit of blathering), a trail of thoughts that winds all the way back to those first steps in 2006.
Or just meander through my past muses… Just hope the coffee isn’t stale!
Sunday, September 15
Weekend mornings start on the front porch because I almost always sleep in. And, by the time I’m up, the back porch is warming up too much for comfort. So, instead of a rocking chair…
Saturday, September 14
Yesterday I was in East Bernard to say my goodbyes to Sissy. It was a nice service. Once I left for home I decided to take a side trip thru Orchard where both Sissy and…
Friday, September 13
On the road…
Thursday, September 12
The soundtrack of the morning is all about chickens and trains. Off in the distance towards town it’s dump trucks. That loud bang as the rear gate swings back against the body and causes a…
Wednesday, September 11
Laying in bed, listening to rolling thunder… once up I’m greeted with dark clouds across the sky. At least it’s dropped the temperature… It must be the weather, but, I’m hearing more birds about this…
Tuesday, September 10
Not so cool, but more humidity. As the sun clears the horizon, there’s a haze hanging in the air. I just received word that my cousin Sissy passed this morning. I think I’ll just sit…
Monday, September 9
Overcast mornings are nice for a change. Lower humidity is even nicer. There’s a good chance I’ll even get to mow today… With the temperature in the mid-seventies, the lowered humidity and the ceiling fans…
Sunday, September 8
Just another warm and sunny day. I don’t have much to muse over today… so here’s the daily photo.
Saturday, September 7
Another cloud less start to a late summer day. The breeze from the fan feels cool… almost to the point of chilled. The prognosticators are foretelling of more heat in our future. While all of…
Friday, September 6
Another mid-seventies start to what promises to be a very hot day. When I left Kelsey after noon yesterday, the cars thermometer read 109º before moving air dropped to 97º about 5 miles down the…
Thursday, September 5
Mid seventies to start the day. But, mid afternoon will be pushing 100º. Just like yesterday. Yesterday’s muse didn’t happen because of an early morning appointment to see my Doctor. I get to drive back…
Tuesday, September 3
The distant rumble of thunder greets me as I sit on the back porch. It’s the first quiet morning in September. The grandkids are in school. The wife and daughter are at work. Even the…
Monday, September 2, Labor Day
I see the postal service is busy today delivering Amazon packages. And thanks to the Texas Legislature, anyone who hijacks those packages off of front porches will, as of yesterday, be committing a felony. The…
Sunday, September 1
I slept in this morning. The heat is up, so is the humidity. The news this morning is of Dorian and another mass shooting in Texas. What the hell is the problem in Texas? Anyway,…
Saturday, August 31
Another below 80º morning. I hate to jinx it, but it almost feels like fall… there’s some heavy sarcasm hiding in plane sight right there. We’ve reached that part of the year when the house…
Friday, August 30
Another almost cool morning on the back porch to start a long weekend. I have to run early this morning… so, here’s a couple of photos to fill the page. Catch you tomorrow…
Thursday, August 29
It feels cooler today. Plus, the humidity isn’t as high. The day is starting out promising. A slight overcast shades the morning sun. It’s also very quiet. Almost as if the day is holding it’s…
Wednesday, August 28
The sun is just breaking the horizon, dewdrops are sparkling on the grass. The prognosticators are foretelling of a change coming. Dry air filtering in the weekend. It won’t change the temperatures much, but, it…
Tuesday, August 27
It’s laundry day here. So I’m working thru the muse… have a look out my front door.
Monday, August 26
The humidity is so high this morning that I could wash the windows without cleaner or water. That doesn’t make for a pleasant muse. I’m sitting out here listening to the birds and the traffic…
Sunday, August 25
And the heat is back.. Yesterday morning was as a fluke. By evening the heat and humidity had returned. Trying to sit and enjoy my coffee isn’t working. So the muse is over… heading in….
Saturday, August 24
I slept in… it seems to be the story of my weekends. It’s overcast this morning. After the rain yesterday afternoon, this has promises of rapid grass growth. The bread I’ve been tossing out into…
Friday, August 23
More showers on the horizon, more humidity in the air… It’s a no muse Friday.
Thursday, August 22
Another mid summer’s morning, warm and humid. The birds are singing happily. Towering over everything is a thunder cloud. A massive tower of white water vapor covering over a quarter of the sky. Drifting ever…
Wednesday, August 21
A light fog is spreading as I sit here. The view shown in the image about is already hazier than 5 minutes ago when I shot it. There is a single crow announcing itself to…
Tuesday, August 20
Up early, not needing a morning sweat bath. Coffee is gone… muse unmused. Working on a Clancy novel as I wait for the next season of Jack Ryan on Amazon. MSNBC playing in the background…
Monday, August 19
Just another hot and humid morning on the back porch. Mostly blue skies again at the start of the day. Though clouds are already showing off to the east and southeast. The thermometer was telling…
Sunday, August 18
Just another hot and humid morning on the front porch. There’s a dog barking his displeasure with the day somewhere close. Sometime soon this weather will break. Though I hate to think what might follow….
Saturday, August 17
Hot and humid. Not a cloud in the sky except way off over the bay. It’s weekend quiet, lite traffic on the bypass. Some birdsong from the trees around the yard. No breeze. Already, it’s…
Friday, August 16
Out before the sun this morning. Off in the distance the thump, thump of tires on expansion joints let’s me know that the world still turns. The temperature hasn’t moderated one bit. A low of…
Thursday, August 15
The thunderstorms last evening left the morning just a bit cooler… and quite a bit louder. The city is cleaning up a downed oak limb that was across the road. High winds, high temperatures and…
Wednesday, August 14
On the back porch this morning. The day is starting out hazy… humid… quiet. The haze doesn’t last much past the sun breaking the horizon. Sitting back here, you don’t here the local traffic, just…
Tuesday, August 13
It’s another warm start to a mid summer’s day. The thermometer in the bathroom had an outdoor temperature reading of 78º before I stepped out. Though, sitting in front of the floor fan, it isn’t…
Monday, August 12
On the front porch to start the day… and the week. There’s a lot of Monday morning traffic moving by… strangely, most of it’s moving out into the county, not in to town. The shrubbery…
Sunday, August 11
Another warm and humid, dog day of summer. A day I wouldn’t consign a dog to being outside. Miserable days and nights to be outside… though, I recall a summer in the late seventies or…
Saturday, August 10
Another hot and humid start to a summer day. This is why high summer is my least favorite season of the year. Even though the world is green and full of life, it’s just not…

Wednesday, August 7

Tuesday, August 6
Diamonds sparkle on the grass as the sun clears a cloud… then fade to dewdrops as the cloud reclaims the sun. My crazy kumquat tree is covered with big green fruit again. By the time…

On the front porch on this Sunday morning. The doves are calling quite loudly out here. It’s warm and sticky today. Time to fire up the floor fan and move some air. It’s not the…
Saturday, August 3
I’ve been watching the traffic in town go from bad to worse in the last couple of weeks. Do you think it’s a coincidence that all of the local governments are asking their constituents to…
Friday, August 2
Another quiet morning on the back porch. Still, damp… dew on the ground. Even the birds are mostly quiet. The coffee was still dripping when I came out… so I’m still coffee free. It’s making…
