2023 Day 236

Thursday August 24th

It’s just another hot and humid morning in SE Texas… Without a drop of rain in the forecast.

I was sitting around today when I noticed the second airplane buzzing by over the house… And for some reason that triggered a memory from my childhood. We lived in far north-western Pasadena, Texas when I was growing up. And it just so happened that our house was directly in line with one of the runways at Hobby Airport. We were 4.46 miles from the end ow the runway almost due northeast. And in the late ’50’s and early ’60’s Hobby was the only airport handling commercial air travel in Houston. This was also the time frame that the airlines transition from props to jets.

And let me tell you those planes were quite loud. And the regulations back then didn’t force airlines to get up in the air in any hurry. So as they passed over our house it seemed as if they were only a few hundred feet in the air. And at that altitude the whole house would seem to be stuck in a never-ending Elvis song.. it would just shake, rattle, and rock and roll. On some days it seemed like the planes would be parading overhead one after the other… depending on the prevailing winds they would be lined up landing or taking off all day long,

So here I am an hour later having learned more about commercial air travel, Hobby Airport history… and Eliza Gilkyson than I expected when I went out to watch for the morning buses…

Y’all try to stay cool and I’ll catch you all on the other side…
