2023 Day 128

Monday May 8th

The morning is not quite as warm… Though the difference isn’t enough to really matter at 76°. As you can see the sky is overcast as it has been on a majority of the days this year.

It was on this day in 2006 that I started to “blog” over on Blogger. That original blog was started as North Carolina Mountain Dreams

Day One of the next stage of my life…

Inventing the Myth as I Go

Where am I heading and how will I get there?

You are welcome to come along for the ride. Try not to fall off as we round the curves…

I have tried to do this blog thing before and haven’t managed to develop the discipline to make it work…Blame it on the Floyd County Group of Bloggers for this new try. Fred First and his Fragments From Floyd Blog is inspiring me to begin again in the creation of the myth that is my life. Give me a little time and I’ll try to tie up the loose ends…
Gary Boyd – May 8, 2006

Those first posts mostly related to my new found love of the mountains of northwest North Carolina in the area around Valle Crucis. As I recalled in 2009…

That was the original post on a new blog I set up with Blogger. North Carolina Mountain Dreams was a description of a state of mind as well as the title of a new blog. As long as the conversation stay focused (more of less) on that dream, it was a good fit.

Sometime later I began to notice that most of the posts were beginning to be about my life in Texas and less about my Mountain Dreams. The category most of the posts were falling into was “coffee muses”. After a quick check of domain name registrations, I bought the name and moved my primary blog post to this site.

Looking back at my history on the web… I found this chronology:

  • December 1998; Geocities Genealogy website
  • January 2001; Blogger Blog (never regular)
  • January 2004; Moved from Geocities to Rootsweb FreePages for my genealogy website.
  • In 2005 and 2006 I had started reading a number of blogs originating from the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and Virginia. That led me to starting North Carolina Mountain Dreams on Blogger in May of 2006.
  • During the run up to the 2006 elections and for a while afterword I started a second blog on Blogger where I let my political demons run wild. Rants against the Bush Administration were regular attractions. I called my political site Blues From The Red Side.  That site was  moved into my spin off from North Carolina Mountain Dreams, this site Coffee Muses.
  • During the many convoluted meanders of defining myself on the web, the two original domains I claimed in August of 2000, Gary-Boyd.com and Boyd-Family.net have been used to house differing aspects of my on-line life. Boyd-Family.net has been forwarded to whatever site housed my genealogy and family history pages until I finally set them up on my shared hosting account.
  • Coffee Muses began in 2007 when I discovered that I was spending more time blogging about life and Texas than about the North Carolina Mountain Dreams I still have. The name came from a tag I was using regularly to categorize my morning muses before heading out the door to work. When I checked and the domain name was available I jumped on it and CoffeeMuses.com became my main, daily home on the web.
  • August 2008: Moved my genealogy site to The Next Generation and my hosting plan. North Carolina Mountain Dreams moved to it’s own hosted site. I added GaryBoydPhotograpy.com and VirginiaMountianDreams.com to the growing family of domains I use to house my varied interests.

After my work life ended at the end of 2008 I expanded my Mountain Dreams Branded sites to be included under the banner of Appalachian Mountain Dreams. I eventually acquired the domain name MountainDreamsPress.com and rolled all of the mountain dreams sites under it.

A long and convoluted history I know… But breakfast is calling.. so I’ll catch y’all on the other side.
