Monday, Memorial Day

For all intents and purposes, this is the first day of my summer. No more alarms getting me up before the sun. For that matter no more alarms for school bus routes and waking the kids. It’s just me and my internal clock deciding when to get out of bed.

And it definitely is summer… The humidity, and for that matter the heat, slapped me in the face when I walked out this morning at 7:00 a.m. . It’s already 79° out and headed into the 90’s I’m sure.

I have the ceiling fans running… And, there’s a good breeze out of the south, it’s just not a cooling breeze. We’ve had enough rain in the last week or so to make sure the world is green.

And it really is green out. Almost a more monochromatic green than we’re used to.

Moisture off the gulf is streaming north in the form of clouds. And they’re really moving fast across the skyscape. Doing the sun more than letting it through, a good thing on a warm day.

The air is filled with bird calls. Crows in the distance, northern Cardinals all around, even an occasional wren and mocking bird. And always, just at the edge of audibility, the chickens around the corner.

And for some reason, I’m seeing more butterflies than in past years. They appear to be everywhere. On the chaste tree, on the mimosa, even flickering around on the grass. Oranges, reds, yellows, black… the multitude of colors is really amazing.

Well, as much as I’m enjoying my coffee on the back porch, it’s time to leave the heat and head back inside. I’ll catch you all on the other side… Have a memorial day.
