Thursday – Insurrection Day – 1st Anniversary

It’s another warm and foggy “winter” morning… I wandered out while the video was rendering and uploading and met my new neighbor. He seems like a nice enough guy. He was out trying to mow a break around his section of woods. While we stood talking at the back corner, all of the bovine ladies came up to see what we were gossiping about… sadly, I forgot my phone so no photos of the girls…

It will certainly feel like winter later today and tonight as a front moves through the region this morning. Drier air will move into the region from the northwest today, and winds will gust up to about 20 mph from the north-northwest. Although high temperatures will get into the 60s this afternoon beneath sunny skies, they’ll drop off pretty quickly this evening, and bottom out at about 40 degrees overnight in Houston. A few outlying areas may see a light freeze.

Today’s date has started to feel a lot like 9/11 in a lot of minds. It had that same visceral feeling as it played out on the television last year as when the planes flew into the towers… And yet… Almost half of America doesn’t see it that way.

There is a whole lot I could say here… But really, if you feel like I do about 1/6, I’m preaching to the choir… If you don’t, and you prefer the Big Lie, nothing I might say matters to you. So, why bother…

So… Y’all stay safe, stay healthy, and pray that our dysfunctional nation and that the world doesn’t fall off the rails as it careens into our seemingly dystopian future…

Catch y’all on the other side…

Ok… I just have to share a piece by John Scalzi about the day…

If there is one thing the United States is fortunate about, one year after Donald Trump supporters, with the then-president’s now-clearly-explicit consent, stormed the US Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the electoral vote count and allow Trump to unconstitutionally remain in power, it is that in this endeavor, as in nearly every other that Trump and his supporters have attempted, they were spectacularly incompetent. Had the attack been one whit less half-assed and shambolic, or had Trump himself and his team had even the slightest bump to their ability for executive function, then things might have been very different. There might be dead Congresspeople, or a hanged Vice-President, and while I do not believe Trump would have managed to remain in power, the process by which he would be required to be removed would have been a great deal more unpleasant. The goal was a coup, not just against the incoming president, but against the Constitution of the United States, and the idea of our nation as a republic. All that stood between that coup and its short-term success was competence. That’s it.
