Sunday, May twentieth

Slightly cooler, but still humid, cloudy with a chance of rain morning coffee muses.

There are scattered showers off to the west on radar. Unfortunately, we could use more than a shower here. It’s been quite awhile since we’ve had a good rain and the landscape is showing the effects. So, seeing actual clouds in the sky is a welcome sight.

Yesterday at lunch, a BBC crew came into the local Tex-mex for lunch. The cameraman was carrying his over the shoulder camera with him. I suppose he was adverse to leaving it in the rental car. After we ate, we drove down 6 past the high school. What a media circus that is… was. Satellite trucks parked everywhere. Canopies lining the side of the road with camera locations.

This morning, listening to the birds, the roosters crowing, the lack of traffic noise… it’s like the last few days didn’t happen… but, sadly, they really did. Once again our leaders are going to fail at leading. We need new leaders.

My muse is stuck in a place I never thought it could… would be. What’s wrong with my country? Why do we cater to the conspiracy theorists amongst us with such fervor. I mean really, think about where we have gotten to. Not all that long ago someone walking down the street carrying an assault rifle would have been surrounded and hauled off to jail. Suddenly, it’s becoming the law of the land that that’s ok… in a polite society, that can never be ok.

Hell, one of the first people on site at the high school Friday was a man with a flag, a revolver, and a Trump “Make America Great Again” cap… really, you can’t make this stuff up. When interviewed, he said he thought it was a good idea… think about that. When is it a good idea to run into an active shooter event as a civilian with a gun?

Like almost everything in American politics these days, our gun debate is being pushed from the fringes of society. Open carry laws are just the latest example of a policy looking for a disaster. When did Americans become so afraid of their government that they felt the need to overarm themselves as if they feared the zombie apocalypse?

My brain is tired, my muse has run dry. All I’m left with is this… God save America… from ourselves.
