The view from the window beside me looks out on a winter’s day. Winter green and tan are the colors of the view.
But the color I have been seeing all morning long has been sky blue. It’s the blue of the Blue Jays that have been landing in the yard below my window. Time after time they are flying down to search among the green and brown…Looking for that acorn buried in the leaves and grass. Once they find one they fly into the trees lining the yard to beat it against a limb until they can extract the kernel inside.
Leaves still fall like rain from the oaks above the house. Littering the grass with their brown bodies like large brown splashes of water in the green of the winter lawn. A lawn unmowed now for months, green and brown in it’s winter finery.
So far, this winter has been the opposite of last years. Much fewer cold clear days that are good for walking out and about, many more dreary, misty days. Not a lot of real precipitation falling though. This whole state is needing our groundwater replenished.
