A Morning Drive To The Refuge

It was late last week when Linda from The Task at Hand left a comment on a post here. In her comment she mentioned having traveled to the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge and seeing some/a wood stork and some rosette spoonbills. I had been wanting to drive down that way myself and hearing I might get to see a wood stork, a species I had not seen before, only made me want to make the trip more…

The first thing I came across was this alligator feeding in a small pool beside the road.ip

He was ignoring the immature Yellow-crowned Night-Heron standing at the edge of the pool.

Driving down the road a bit and sure enough, Wood Stork sighting…

  1. Hooray! I’m so glad you got to see such a variety, along with the storks. I was afraid you’d go and not see them.

I need to go back this weekend, earlier. I was trying to photograph the birds at very nearly high noon, and the photos are even worth posting — although they’re good for a record. What lens were you using? The photos are just so fine. It’s hard to pick, but I think the roseate spoonbill with its reflection is my favorite — but why choose?

  2. I use a Nikon 18-300 zoom. And this time I had a 2x tel-extender on it to reach out…Sadly, I was hand-holding and the majority of the shots were a bit blurry. I only had about a 10% acceptable rate… Very low for my usual shooting trip.

I even had a tripod along but I was afraid to leave the car with it… didn’t want to spook the birds (or the alligator). And getting there a sunup was nice for a change…
