Morning on the back porch with my coffee, music playing softly in the background, reading my email and checking the news… I began to notice the one fluffy white cloud on the horizon wasn’t moving. It would build up for a while then dissipate… then build up again and dissipate… and again… that’s when I noticed the brownish gray smudge leading away across the sky.
So, somewhere south of here, and not too far away because I now remember a faint smell of smoke when I walked out, there is field burning on this quiet, still morning.
Smoke rising high into the still sky before catching a bit of a breeze and heading northwest as just a hint of something almost unseen in the spotless blue summer sky.
It’s always interesting to see when they begin burning the wildlife refuges in Chambers County, and the rice/cane fields beyond those. With an east wind, it can be noticed immediately. With a really strong east wind, I’ve had ashes falling on varnish.
