I keep coming back to the fact that this has been one of the gloomiest winters I can remember. We seem to have been stuck in the overcast since Thanksgiving. Just a day (or at most two) of sunshine each week or so.
The only brightness in my days are the goldfinches at the feeder outside my window. Watching the stream of birds less than 10′ away as they come and go causes me to forgive the clouds their long term stay.
Right there in Tomorrow’s forecast… Chance of Snow… Nah… Not here. Can’t happen. Can it?
I’ll admit it has been colder than we are used to for the last few days. Today the temperature dropped right up until noon before it climbed back up a couple of degrees. Now we are seeing a Chance of Snow…
In this part of the country, every snowfall is an event. Event hose that never even reach the ground. A covering of sleet that leaves the ground covered in white can be a cause of celebration. Watching teeny tiny white powder flakes falling from the sky will tie up the phone lines as everyone in the county calls their family to tell them about the big event. “Go outside…Quick…There is a Chance of Snow”.
As sad as it may sound, I’ll lose sleep tonight. I wont want to miss my opportunity to see the Chance of Snow. Then… In the morning as I sleep in after staying up most of the night… It’ll happen… Without me… The Chance of Snow.
Why do I get so excited? Well, you see, once upon a time we had another “Chance of Snow”. It was Christmas Eve 2004…
What that night did to all of us along the Texas coast was prove that yes a Chance of Snow could be real… And now, every time there is a Chance of Snow, this is what we see in our mind…
Stay warm… Stay safe… And keep the faith… There is a Chance of Snow in the forecast…
It’s not looking too good for our chance of snow at this point. I think everything’s moved off to the east. At least we get sunshine for a few days now.
Our “winter window” is closing, though. There can be ice in February for sure, and maybe even a March cold snap, but the next four weeks are going to be about it. I need sunny days until the end of January to finish a job, but then it can turn as nasty as it wants. 😉
I have to admit I didn’t really believe it would happen. I was just brought up short by the very suggestion that there was a chance…I need the sunny days also. It’s just more of a mental health thing than a occupational thing. Though it would be nice to have good weather for my Birthday Road Trip next month…
