It’s starting to feel like my time of the year. The trees are still mostly dressed in their summer finest, though with the wind gusts today, they won’t be for long. So far this fall, we have only seen color on the Chinese tallow trees. I am holding out hope for the red oak again this year…Only time will tell if it’s justified. Last year was the first time since I planted it that the tree looked like it was supposed to…
So far this year it is just starting to show yellow-orange around the edges of a few leaves. But mornings like this morning…Chilly…Breezy…Sunshine on my face as I drink my morning coffee. Watching the birds soar on the gusting winds…The leaves move horizontally across the yard, chasing each other as they ride the wind.
One cup follows another as I enjoy the peace of a breezy fall day on the back porch with my Kindle. Catch you tomorrow…
I’ve seen a couple of Japanese maples beginning to turn, and a bit of bungundy on Bradford pears. Some of the dry cypress have turned, too – there will be drifts of needles soon.
The coots and grebes suddenly are here. I’ve heard reports of geese flying over on the east side of the bay, too – Anahuac and such. Last night, we had the ritual first-turning-on-of-the-heater, with the accompanying shrill panic of the smoke alarm, running of the cat and frantic fanning of the homeowner, trying to get the stupid thing to stop. We’re ready for autumn over here!
When we were at the Nash Prairie there was a group of six sandhill cranes flying over as we collected seeds. My water oaks and pecans have been dropping leaves for a while now…But I think it’s more from being dry than from the weather.
My morning coffee muse just ran to a single cup on the back porch. Funny the difference a day makes in how it feels on the backporch…
