Happy Earth Day 2011

Today is Earth Day. A celebration of our Mother the Earth sometimes known as Gaea.

My plan to celebrate the day is to spend a big part of it outside in my backyard. The dewberries are ripening and make a tart mouthful as I wander around. The mockingbirds are serenading all who stop and listen. Mother Earth is cooling our not so spring like temperatures with copious shade and breezes from the ocean to dry the sweat on our brows as soon as it forms.

There are a few mulberry trees along the edge of the woods that are showing a ripe berry or two to allow me to remember those carefree days of old where I first learned the joys of nature.

Had my life gone as planned just a few short years ago, I would have been settling down in the Blue Ridge mountains about now not planning a new home here on the Gulf Coast of Texas. As usual, life has different plans for you than you have for it. My original plan had been to retire on Earth Day 2010. It wasn’t for any particular reason other than a feeling that 38 years at one job was long enough. The economy and a change in management rushed that day a year or so, but also allowed for a early enjoyment of exploring nature and family.

So…Happy Earth Day. Go out and spend some time fighting the ol’ nature deficit disorder today…You’ll be glad you did. I am.
