After months of days on end with no rain hitting the ground at our home here south of Houston I was beginning to despair. But the last week has finally seen a small amount of precipitation.
We went a couple of weeks with a weekly shower before this week when it finally started hitting us on an almost daily basis. Now don’t start envisioning the kind of rain that has been filling up the creeks and rivers up north. We are still right on the edge of the great Texas drought machine that has dropped the water levels all along the string of lakes coming down out of the Hill Country. Last week I even had to run a sprinkler to stave off the grass completely drying up and burning away as rain poured down just a half a mile away on most days. I doubt we are out of the woods even yet…But for a few days we should be OK.
Even this afternoon we are seeing clouds to the west and east. No thunder…yet. But, with afternoon warming I am sure we will be hearing some by 3pm…
Speaking of thunder…Every time a thunderstorm goes through our phone service goes down. That means every time a bolt of lightning strikes around here I lose Internet and phones. Whenever it happens, you can pick up a handset and hear…nothing. Now the strange thing about this is, if I use my cell phone to call our land-line it will reset and everything goes back to working…I can’t help but wonder why…
On another note…My wife has one addiction that is causing me some grief. She has to watch her soap everyday. That wouldn’t be a problem except that the new digital signals being broadcast don’t go all fuzzy when something plays havoc with them…They just fade to black. Since her soap comes on at the same time these afternoon thunderstorms decide to blow through each day, her recording just comes out with a black screen…Except when the commercials come on (anyone know why that is?). So, to try and keep the peace, I finally ordered a new outdoor antenna to replace the indoor one we have been using…It should be here tomorrow. So it looks like I’ll get to try and fish some coax out from under the house and climb up on the roof and have some fun trying to keep from killing myself…Wish me luck…
Oh…And keep it down about the rain. I wouldn’t want to jinx us…
