Over the weekend this was in the Times…

Last week, in a small Wyoming town, I saw a family loading groceries into the nose of a gooseneck horse trailer, while the horses stood in the back, watching the shoppers coming and going in the parking lot. For all I knew, the horses had been to the grocery store many times. What struck me wasn’t the oddity of doing some shopping while hauling horses — I’ve done that myself. It was the way the scene pulled me out of my own life and into theirs.

Has that ever happened to you? “It was the way the scene pulled me out of my own life and into theirs.” That one sentence made me sit up and say “yes”. I don’t know how many times something ordinary on the street would catch my eye and suddenly I would know exactly what was going on…Even when I really didn’t. But the connection was real…and intense. A real déjà vu kind of thing…Don’t you know?

Talk to the chief executives of America’s preeminent health-care institutions, and you might be surprised by what you hear: When it comes to medical care, the United States isn’t getting its money’s worth. Not even close.

Now anyone who has studied the statistics already knew this. As the article points out…

The United States today devotes 16 percent of its gross domestic product to medical care, more per capita than any other nation in the world. Yet numerous measures indicate the country lags in overall health: It ranks 29th in infant mortality, 48th in life expectancy and 19th out of 19 industrialized nations in preventable deaths.

The debate no longer is whether we need to fix the system. The debate now is how far do we go to fix the system. At least with a new administration, we will get that debate.

  1. The only problem with the health care system is the governmental lobbyists and our elected body’s pockets being lined by the profiteering corporations who say, “vote no on change.”

    There is no fix for this outside of nationalization. But nationalization will increase the red-tape of an already slow system.

    We don’t need new health care we need a new country. Preferably a more direct democracy, where there are 400million pockets to line, not just 400.
