Summer Mowing

Leon is having the same thoughts I am as I drive circles around my place…

Leon Hale: Cutting a 42-inch swath
So now I mow the four acres myself, on a John Deere riding mower that cuts a 42-inch swath. Takes me a long time but I don’t mind because I can think of something else while I mow. I get some of my best thinking time on that mower.

When I hit a big fire ant mound that powerful blade throws ants 35 and 40 feet. But I know it doesn’t kill them. I think they just shrug and start digging to make a new nest. I’m probably sowing fire ants, the way a farmer scatters seed.

A memory I’ll keep, about mowing at Winedale: On May 22, 2008, I drove into Round Top to fill a five-gallon gas of lawn mower gas, and it cost me $18.50.

My Deere is in the shop this week, I can’t wait for it to come home…
