Runa Wild-Kin – Bugbear, Barbarian

Character Dossier: Runa Wild-Kin

“Your stone towers do not touch the sky; they only hide from it. Out here, the earth breathes. Walk with me, and perhaps you will learn to breathe with it.”

Part 1: Lore & Backstory

The Cradle of Bark and Briar

Runa remembers no mother of flesh and blood. Her earliest sensory memory is not a hearth fire or a lullaby, but the damp, mineral scent of black loam, the rustle of crown-canopies two hundred feet high, and the steady, resonant heartbeat of Old Mother Rowan—a towering, awakened ironwood elder in the deep untamed basin known as the Verdant Reach.

Local wood-wives and border druids tell conflicting tales of how a goblinoid child came to rest in a sanctuary forbidden to mortals. Some say a fleeing clan of forest goblins cast her into a hollow stump to save her from a winter famine; others whisper that she was a changeling swapped into an unseeding barrow by an archfey whose whims are lost to time. What is undeniable is her anomaly: though she bears the pointed, mobile ears, sharp profile, and lean sinew of a hobgoblin, her skin carries an undertone of lichen-green, and from her hips downward her legs are clad in fine, iridescent, pebbled scales like those of an ancient river drake.

Old Mother Rowan did not let the cold claim her. She sheltered the infant within root-hollows lined with peat and shelf fungus, while a solitary pride of moss-lynxes—massive fey predators with mossy pelts and amber eyes—adopted her into their hierarchy. Runa was never coddled as a pet. She was tumbled in the snow, cuffed for hunting downwind, and taught to stalk elk before she possessed words for human concepts. She learned that every life consumed must be honored, that bone yields marrow, and that fury is not an illness, but a fire lit to preserve the pack.

The Clear-Cutting of the Reach

Her wild Eden fractured during her eighteenth summer. The expansionist merchant houses of the trade metropolis of Silverpeak, funded by the Iron-Vane Cartel, pushed logging roads into the virgin timber of the Verdant Reach. They brought black powder, runic cross-cut saws, and clockwork logging constructs fueled by alchemical fire. Their objective was not merely lumber, but Shimmerglass—primal, fey-charged quartz clusters fused within the taproots of ancient groves.

The lynx pride struck back from the brush, but steel and alchemical incendiaries broke their bodies. When the crews brought their chains and drilling iron to the base of Old Mother Rowan, Runa stood between the saws and the sacred bark. She watched the tree’s sap boil under alchemical fire and heard the splintering roar that silenced five miles of forest.

Something feral and primordial tore loose in Runa’s bloodline. The wild spirits that inhabited her skin and sinew answered her agony with transformation. Her fingernails extended into hooked, calcified claws; her jaw unhinged with predatory vigor. She tore through the logging camp under the red light of the dying canopy, dismantling mercenaries and clockwork engines with bare, tearing hands.

When the blood cleared, only one surveyor remained pinned beneath a fallen girder. Runa did not kill him. She stripped an ornate, silver-filigreed longsword from the slain mercenary captain’s hip, leaned over the terrified surveyor, and whispered her decree:

“The Reach breathes. You do not. Run back to your cages and tell them what waits in the leaves.”

The Path Beyond the Timber

Runa is now an exile by circumstance. The Verdant Reach still smolders along its southern flank, guarded by heavy cartel garrisons. Realizing she cannot break an empire of coin and stone alone, Runa walks the borderlands. She treats civil settlements with watchful suspicion, seeking two things: the coin and allies necessary to bring down the men who ordered the destruction of her home, and a true pack worthy of running beside her.

Equipment

  • Scavenged High-Steel Longsword: Ornate and silver-hilted, taken from the cartel captain. Handled casually as a heavy prybar or butcher’s knife rather than a knightly relic.
  • Secondary Weapons: 4 Javelins (bound in leather straps across her pack), an explorer’s pack.
  • Keepsake: A petrified knot of heartwood taken from Old Mother Rowan, strung on raw sinew around her throat.

Part 3: Roleplay & Personality

Defining Mannerisms

  • The Ears: Her long, mobile goblinoid ears are her emotional barometer. When focused, they swivel forward independently to map terrain acoustics. When irritated or cornered, they pin flat against her skull like a panther’s.
  • The Scales: The smooth, moss-tinted scales on her thighs and shins shed water and brush easily. She often sits cross-legged, absently picking sap or burrs from the seams between her scales with her hunting knife.
  • Weapon Interaction: She does not maintain the longsword with whetstones and oil out of reverence; she scrapes it clean on flat stones. When real battle begins and her rage takes hold, she routinely jams the blade point-first into the dirt so her hands are entirely free to tear with her manifested natural claws.
  • Personal Space: She ignores civilized concepts of conversational distance. She steps directly into an interlocutor’s space, catches their scent, and inspects their throat and stance before deciding whether they warrant attention or dismissed indifference.

Personality & Instincts

  • Personality Trait: “I place no trust in spoken contracts or deeds stamped on sheepskin. If an alliance cannot be sealed by shared meat and blood drawn side-by-side, it is a spider’s web.”
  • Ideals: “The Greater Cycle. The forest does not hoard; what is taken must be returned to the soil. Those who take without balance are rot, and rot must be excised.” (Chaotic Good)
  • Bonds: “The ash of Old Mother Rowan still clings to my skin. I will hunt down Lord Vance and every coin-master who financed the Iron-Vane Cartel’s axes.”
  • Flaws: “Civilized spaces make my spine crawl. When cornered inside stone halls or locked rooms, my first instinct is to smash through the nearest window or throat.”

Dialogue Style

Runa speaks Common deliberately, discarding needless social pleasantries. She treats metaphors as literal physical realities and struggles to comprehend social posturing.

  • To an urban merchant: “You build walls to keep out the night, then light lamps because you fear the dark you trapped inside. You pay coin for grain you did not reap. This is not prosperity; it is starving slowly in a stone trap.”
  • To a hesitant party member: “Hesitation leaves the flank open. When the elk charges, you drop your shoulders and meet the horns. Ready your steel or stand behind me.”
  • On etiquette: “Why do you boil the fire out of the flesh? The blood is the marrow’s song. Eat it while it remembers being alive.”

Part 4: DM Hooks & Campaign Integration

Hook 1: The Iron-Vane Retribution (Urban / Faction Conflict)

  • Premise: Lord Theron Vance, director of the Iron-Vane Cartel, operates from a fortified guild house in the campaign’s major trade city. He is currently hiring veteran escorts to safeguard his next mechanized survey convoy into virgin territories.
  • Trigger: Runa identifies Vance’s family crest stamped on trade crates or uniform tabards in an urban market. She needs the party’s wits and social camouflage to infiltrate Vance’s circle, but the DM can use Runa’s visceral hatred of the cartel to create high-stakes tension whenever negotiations border on compromise.

Hook 2: The Sylvan Inheritance (Lineage & Fey Mystery)

  • Premise: Runa’s physical combination of hobgoblin form, drake scales, and primal beast manifestation is not accidental. An ancient fey court—perhaps the Unseelie Gloaming Court or a primal Circle of Ancient Scales—recognizes her features as the marking of a stolen scion.
  • Trigger: At Level 4 or 5, an emissary (such as a green hag or an archfey’s displacement beast hound) crosses the party’s trail. They do not attack; instead, they refer to Runa by a forgotten primordial name (“The Root-Crowned Child”) and demand she return to pay an ancestral debt incurred before the Reach was ever logged.

Hook 3: The Heartwood Cleaver (Personal Progression Quest)

  • Premise: Runa’s scavenged longsword is ill-suited to her growing primal power. To unlock her full potential, she must forge a signature weapon from her past.
  • Trigger: Upon reaching Level 3 or 4, Runa experiences a fever dream triggered by her petrified Rowan pendant. She must journey back to the scarred clearing of the Verdant Reach, retrieve a pristine length of unburnt heartwood guarded by cartel remnants or corrupting blight-creatures, and bind it with the shedding of her own scales and cold iron to craft a Primal Greataxe (potentially granting thematic bonuses such as +1 to hit or a burst of natural thorn/slashing damage during a Rage).
