2023 Day 188

Friday July 7th

Weather Muses – The overcast this morning is complete. You can almost make out where the sun is on the horizon.. almost. As far as temperatures and humidity and dew points go .. it is all pretty much a repeat of yesterday.

Speaking of yesterday, we had a fairly decent soaking rain shower in the afternoon. In normal Houston fashion, it was raining during the afternoon rush hour. Particularly for anyone traveling from the inner city.

This morning the radar is showing quite a bit of rain out in the gulf slowly drifting this way. So I’m sure that sometime today we will find ourselves wet…

Yesterday, as I listened to my music, a song of Rodney Crowell’s I hadn’t heard before rotated through my playlist… “The Damage”.

"The Damage"

So you found me at the end of my life
By the bend in the river at dawn
Have you come to my aid, are there deals to be made
Red lines in the sand to be drawn

Now that you're here, pray tell me, my dear
Why it is you've come to my door
By virtue of sin, should I let you in?
I can't say you'll suffer no more

The lyrics were so haunting I had to investigate.. which led me to this article in American Songwriter. It seems this magazine is showing up more and more in my searches as I listen to music…

When director Haroula Rose was casting Once Upon a River, she initially had country singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell in mind for one of the film’s key characters. Unfortunately, a health issue led Crowell to bow out of the role. Instead, he penned a captivating and calamitous tale of loss, need, and lone survival on “The Damage.”

So… Haroula Rose? … Now I had to know… which is how I ended up listening to this…

Trust me.. I will be exploring more of her work.. both film and music. And all because of a hauntingly written Rodney Crowell song playing as I read my morning’s email.

So I’m off… Catch y’all on the other side.
