The 4th of July

Independence Day

Sunday

Another warm and humid morning. Overcast with high clouds. Not a breath of a breeze. The weather sure not right for celebration.

It has that Sunday quiet working. When you had independence day to that Sunday quiet, you get a lot fewer traffic sounds from the bypass. When you add the overcast to the equation, more people seem to be sleeping in than usual.

Even with the heat, we will be firing up the grill. Grilling up some dogs. I will be letting my elder son fight the heat over the grill though. I even have a watermelon on the counter.

I can’t help but think back those long years back to that summer of 1776 and the cosmopolitan town of Philadelphia that was. All those men, coming together and what we now call Independence Hall… With oratory, probably with harsh words for each other, but somehow, they came up with a document, an ideal, a leap forward in the thinking of men. And a nation was fledged.

I doubt they could anticipate what they wrought would lead to what we have today. I would like to think they would feel some pride… But I have a feeling we would also feel some sadness. So if you look at the history, even then neighbors disagreed, even then trippers got hot and neighbor took up arms against neighbor. So maybe, just maybe they could understand the state of the nation all these decades later.

This nation was better than conflict. And over the years conflict has swirled over and over. It almost looks as if it’s part of our DNA as a nation.

But you know what, that’s just celebrate this birthday of America. Let’s just enjoy the 4th of July, this Independence Day.

Don’t stay safe, stay healthy, and pray for this nation and what it means for this world.

Happy Birthday to the United States of America.

  1. I hope your day was a good one! I had to laugh last night — exactly one firecracker went off in my neighborhood, and that was it. There may be more tonight, but League City has made them illegal inside the city limits, which is fine by me. I think sparklers and such still are allowed for the kids, and we always had more fun with those than the noisy ones, anyway. I miss the big shows over the lake, but Fertitta and the Boardwalk pretty much put them out of business, so on we go! Happy Independence Day!

    1. Linda, Saturday night we had a few dozen fireworks close by. Sunday night, that was another story. I want to say the boom started by 8:00 p.m. and while not continuous, there were still plenty going on after 11:00 p.m. . But then again, the city limits follow my back property line and my neighbors side line. So the county basically is my neighbor, and fireworks are legal in the county. We had my entire family over for hot dogs except for my vagabond son living up in Yankee Land. I hope your day was celebratory.
