Yesterday about mid-morning, I was sitting in the rocker on the back porch with a cup of coffee. The temperature had already passed the mid-eighties. The ceiling fans on the porch were the only thing making it doable.
Later in the day, as Sherry was driving in from work, I looked over at the weather station on the credenza and saw the temperature was 97° on the front porch. Stepping out the front door to welcome Sherry home, the heat and humidity just slapped me in the face…
Just now I pulled up the forecast for today on the wunderground.com and this was what I saw:
WednesdayPartly cloudy. High of 91F with a heat index of 102F. Winds from the South at 5 to 15 mph.
Sooooo… Before it gets too hot out there, I need to get out and mow the bit of yard I didn’t get mowed over the weekend. And, from what I am seeing on the forecast, there is a 20% chance of rain for the next two days… Keep your fingers crossed… It’s been 2 ½ weeks since we saw any rain and we can use some.
Yep, it’s hot. And we do need rain. Looking to the north right now, there’s what looks to be a pretty good cloud bank stretched across the horizon. Maybe it’s the beginning of whatever has a chance to bring that rain.
I know this – we’re into the season where all smart varnish workers are out at 7 and work until 7, with a nice break in the middle of the day. At 3:30 this afternoon it was pretty miserable. and I’m not getting any younger!
This Friday is Big Doings over here – the day the space shuttle comes up the channel and through Clear Lake, to be unloaded by the Hilton and taken to NASA. They’re going to close the Kemah Seabrook bridge while the shuttle comes through – I can hardly wait to see what the traffic situation is. Between the closed bridge and all the sightseers, it should be something.
I think the real feel of summer is more audible than heat related, though. The cicadas have been singing as loudly as I ever recall. It just sounds and feels like mid-summer. Next week could see some of that mid-summer craziness with the full moon.
I remember going out to Ellington Field in 1982 and taking photos of the Space Shuttle as it was hauled back to Florida. Watching the landing of the mated aircraft and spacecraft was amazing…The two seemed to float in as light as a feather.
For a time we lived just north of Ellington in Pasadena. I recall seeing the shuttles pas over a number of times through the years we were there on their way back to Florida.
Just stopping by with a weather link for you. There’s a fellow in our area who has a nice new blog called Weather Spectrum . He writes pretty well, has put together some nice entries and has good links. Thought you might enjoy seeing it.
Thanks for the link Linda…I’ve added it to my RSS reader.
Did you get anything from yesterday’s rains? We didn’t even see more than a trace as the storms passed by to our south. Great afternoon light and sound show as I had lunch on the back porch, just not enough rain to even cover the ground once.
