The Saga of Thyra Storm-Biter
Hark, wayfarers of the low roads—throw your copper to the hearth. You drink spiced wine behind valley walls, but you know nothing of the price of sleep. You think peace comes from kings’ parchments or cloistered prayers.
Bah. Peace is paid for in blood, cold and bitter, on stones older than your grandsires’ graves.
Come—let me sing of the Wyrmspire peaks, where the wind cuts like an iron trap and the shattered arches of High Reach claw at the gray belly of the sky.
There stood a threshold between the waking folk and the black roots of the earth. Once, the Crag-Claw kept watch there—wolfskin hunters, bred of flint and alpine frost. They knew the law: Delve not where the stars cannot see. But gold fools wise men, and ambition ruins scholars. Lowland thieves, with pickaxes and pride, broke the warding runes under the old stones.
And from the dark below, the nightmares came.
A tide of chitin and venom, eyes black as pitch, jaws sharp as scythes, boiled up in a single moonless night. The mountain screamed. Star-iron halls collapsed to ash. When the fury spent itself, the clan lay broken, their songs swallowed by stone.
All save one.
Thyra, they call her—the Storm-Biter.
She did not hide behind a palisade in some lowland town, nor sell her honor for a warm hearth and coward’s bread. She went back to the arches. In her right hand: her mother’s star-forged broadsword, blade cut with the old warding runes. In her left: the curved bone-dagger of the first hunt, a thirsting fang for the throat of creeping things.
See her there, among the moss-choked colonnades! Look at the high arch, clouds boiling purple and gold at dusk. The flagstones shake. A sick green glow leaks from the shattered gate, and the deep sends up its foul swarm— barbed carapaces, venom stings, hungry for the sweet air of our valleys.
Does she flinch? Never.
With one cry that cuts through the gale, she meets them. The broadsword flashes through the fog, a clean silver arc splitting shell from horn. Black bile spatters the old stone. When a winged fiend dives for her throat, her bone-dagger darts like a snake, turning the poisoned barb and driving into the chittering brain.
Her breath hangs in frost. Her muscles, hard as mountain roots, drive her onward. She is the storm made flesh, the edge between the crawling dark and the cradle of dawn.
They say she still stands there, watching mist coil round the pillars. No crown on her brow; she claims no kingdom, kneels to no lord. Her only tithe is abyss-blood, paid in full at the threshold stones.
So raise your tankards high to the windward peaks tonight, my friends. Drink to Thyra Storm-Biter, the lone sentinel. Pray her star-iron blade stays sharp. Pray the gate holds... for if she falls, the next door the swarm breaks will be yours.
She is Thyra Storm-Biter, the last born of the Crag-Claw clan and Sentinel of the Shattered Gate.
Long before the stone arches of the High Reach fell to ruins, her kin roamed the frost-hewn peaks of the Wyrmspire Mountains, bound by blood-oath to guard the boundary between the realm of men and the fathomless deep beneath the earth. When the Shadow-Tide rose and swallowed her clan’s ancient holds, it was not an army that broke them, but a betrayal from within the mountain’s roots. Only Thyra walked out from the cavernous dark, cloaked in wolfskin and bearing the runic steel of her ancestors: the great-bladed star-iron sword in her right hand, forged to split dragon-hide, and the curved bone-dagger of the First Hunters in her left, hungry for the blood of oath-breakers.

Now, she stands watch amidst the moss-choked colonnades of the old pass. The mountain winds carry whispers of rising malice—ancient evils stirring once more in the misty valleys below. Neither wild beast nor corrupted knight dares trespass past her threshold, for legends among the lowlanders say her blood runs with the fury of old earth spirits, and that her blades strike like lightning caught in the heart of winter. She seeks no crown and answers to no king, asking only that the encroaching dark come close enough to feel the bite of her steel.

Backstory: The Last Sentinel of High Reach
Thyra was born among the Crag-Claw, a reclusive highland tribe inhabiting the sub-alpine ruins of the High Reach—a colossal stone gateway built by a forgotten empire to bridge civilization with the untamed jagged north. For generations, the Crag-Claw lived as wardens rather than conquerors, harvesting mountain sheep, quarrying star-iron deposits, and keeping superstitious prospectors away from the deeper subterranean passages beneath the ruins.
Her father was the clan’s stone-wright; her mother, a seasoned gate-warden who taught Thyra that a warrior’s greatest weapon is balance on shifting stone. Thyra’s rites of passage were completed by surviving three moons alone in the upper frost-crests, emerging with the pelts of the white dire-wolves that prowled the windward cliffs.

Her life fractured when an expedition of deep-delvers broke the sealed warding seals beneath the ancient gateway, awakening an abyssal subterranean terror. In a single night, the clan’s settlement was turned into a charnel ground. Thyra fought in the rearguard, claiming her mother’s ancestral star-forged longsword and a ceremonial bone-hilted curved dagger. Through blood and blinding snow, she managed to lead a handful of clan elders down into the low valleys before collapsing from her wounds.

When she recovered, the elders had scattered to lowland towns, broken in spirit. Thyra refused to leave the mountain threshold unguarded. She returned to the arches of the High Reach, living among the stone colonnades as a solitary sentinel, turning away foolhardy treasure hunters and cutting down whatever tainted creatures crawl forth from the abyss.
Now, strange omens and dwindling beasts signal that the evil beneath the stones is preparing a wider surface assault. Recognizing she cannot stem an invading tide alone, Thyra has descended into the lowland taverns and trail-crossings to seek seasoned allies.
Personality & Roleplay Cues
- Personality Trait: “I speak plainly and waste few words; silence says more than empty boasts.”
- Ideals: “Vigilance. When those appointed to watch the border fail, the innocent pay with their blood.”
- Bonds: “The star-iron blade in my right hand was forged by my mother’s forebears; I will drop it only when my grip goes cold.”
- Flaws: “I am deeply suspicious of high-born ‘scholars’ and wealthy patrons who treat ancient ruins as curiosities to plunder.”
- Mannerisms:
- Constantly evaluates terrain for choke points, elevation advantages, and falling stone hazards.
- Cleans and sharpens her curved dagger after every meal or skirmish.
- Dislikes enclosed city rooms and prefers sleeping under open skies or in covered stone doorways.
Campaign Hooks
- The Ruined Threshold: The adventuring party is hired to clear an ancient mountain pass to reopen a lucrative trade route. Upon reaching the fog-blanketed colonnade, they find Thyra holding the pass against an ambush of mountain raiders or subterranean aberrations.
- The Stolen Star-Iron: A wealthy merchant or collector in a major city possesses an artifact pillaged from Thyra’s clan ruins during the disaster. She is actively tracking the item down to prevent the release of whatever dark entity was sealed within it.
- The Deep Incursion: Rumors reach the party of monstrous incursions descending from the peaks. The local magistrate dismisses it as tribal superstition, but Thyra arrives in town bearing proof—a chitinous limb or tainted relic—demanding steel and spellcasters to help collapse the gate before the pass is overrun.
