This is an exciting and visually rich character design! Based on her tattoos, armor, and setting, she looks like a natural, wild, and skilled inhabitant of the forest. I will build her as a Wood Elf Ranger who has found a balance between traditional elven grace and a more robust, earthy resilience.

Back Story: The Tattoos of the Old Growth

Lirael is a Wood Elf, but she doesn’t belong to a formal enclave. She is what is sometimes called ‘Root-Kin’ – a lineage of elves whose magic is tied directly to the fungi and root systems of the oldest forests, not just the sky. Her home was the Gilded Root Glade, a place deep in the primal forest where the trees grew so dense that true sunlight was rare, but the forest floor glowed with bioluminescent mushrooms.
She was the glade’s “Whisperer.” While other elves guarded the perimeter with bows, Lirael’s talent was in communication. She studied the vast, silent network of the Mycelium (fungal network), the true nervous system of the forest. This is the source of her extensive, detailed tattoos. They aren’t just ink; they are living maps and conduits.
The mushroom cluster on her right forearm is a map of her home glade’s primary fungal network. The vine and leaf patterns that wrap her other arm and cover her chest are ‘Spirit Vines’ that pulses when the forest is in distress. Her leather armor is custom-made, reinforcing and protecting these vital glyphs.
The pivotal moment of her life came when a sect of necromancers, seeking to turn the forest into a blighted wasteland, attacked the Gilded Root Glade. Lirael fought fiercely, but the forest itself was being corrupted from below. Her tattoos burned and pulsed with agony as the Mycelium withered. In desperation, she touched the glowing core of the ancient ‘Grandmother Mushroom’ and merged her consciousness with the network. She didn’t stop the corruption, but she safesed the Gilded Root’s consciousness by storing a part of it within her own spirit and her ink.
Since that day, Lirael has lived as an exile, traveling the world. The grand, sprawling fungi tattoos are now semi-conscious; sometimes a single small mushroom glyph on her arm will pulse with faint light, indicating a specific magical vibration.
Personality
Trait 1: I feel most at ease when I am surrounded by decay, which I know is just a cradle for new life.Trait 2: I communicate easily with beasts and primal fey, but often misinterpret humanoid social constructs (like manners).Ideal: Renewal. All things must fall so that something new and stronger may rise. I will be the agent of that renewal.Bond: A small part of my home forest’s consciousness is merged with my soul, guided by my tattoos. I must find a new, pure place for it to root before I die.Flaw: I often assume that people with high manners are hiding rot, and I tend to trust ‘clean’ nature more than ‘civilized’ folks.
Mechanics and Future Builds
Class Features (Level 1)
- Favored Enemy (Level 1): Undead (The necromancers who destroyed her home). This grants bonuses to tracking and information recall.
- Natural Explorer (Level 1): Forest. Lirael is unmatched in her chosen terrain.
- Skills (Choose Proficiency in): Perception, Stealth, Survival, Animal Handling.
Special Hook: The “Living Map”
Lirael’s tattoos (image_0.png) can function as a dynamic magical map (akin to a Helm of Comprehend Languages but limited to nature).
- Mechanic: Once per long rest, Lirael can meditate on her tattoos. She attempts a Wisdom (Survival) or Intelligence (Nature) check against a DC set by the DM. On a success, the tattoos pulse, revealing faint, glowing lines corresponding to current animal migration routes, hidden spring water, or powerful sources of fey or necrotic magic within a 1-mile radius. (This is a bespoke mechanic to make her visual design matter).

Future Subclass: Swarmkeeper (Level 3)
This is the perfect fit.
- The “Swarm” of fey spirits will be thematic. Instead of bees, they will be Bioluminescent Fey Mushrooms that manifest from her tattoos and float around her (echoing the lighting in her portrait).
- Fey Swarm (Swarmkeeper Feature): When she hits, her mushroom-spirits attach to the foe, pulsing to provide extra necrotic or piercing damage, or pushing them.
Starting Equipment
Lirael is geared for long-term survival:
- Leather Armor (Custom, open chest design)
- Shortbow and a Quiver of 20 Arrows
- Explorer’s Pack (Includes a bedroll like the one she is resting on).
- A simple, dark wooden mug (She carries this everywhere; it’s the one in image_0.png).
- 5 Flasks of bioluminescent oil (for her lantern, harvested from her home).
- A pouch of Root-Kin Salve (Potent but smells of rot; provides +1 to Medicine checks to stabilize beasts).
Campaign Hooks and Roleplay Ideas
Hooks for the DM:
- The Fading Network: Lirael discovers a place that is silent to her tattoos – a dead zone in the Mycelium that even her tattoos cannot read. Investigations reveal it is a seed of the same necromantic corruption that took her home.
- The Lost Spore: A powerful collector or fey lord is rumored to possess a single, dormant spore from the Grandmother Mushroom. Lirael must retrieve it to ensure her forest’s continuity.
- The Tainted Teacup: The wooden mug she holds is actually carved from a piece of the blighted Grandmother Mushroom itself. It may have subtle magical properties (perhaps granting proficiency in Poison resistance) but also slowly manifests the necromantic corruption.
Roleplay Scenarios:
- Scene 1 (Social): The party meets a sophisticated noble at a banquet. Lirael politely asks to taste the fine wine by dipping her tattoo in it, claiming she can sense its quality. This is how she judges character (not an insult).
- Scene 2 (Combat): When activating her Swarmkeeper abilities, she describes the fey mushroom-glyphs on her tattoos detaching from her skin and swirling around her like playful, miniature, glowing suns, before attaching to the target with a dull, thudding pulse.
- Scene 3 (Camping): In the evening, the party notices Lirael uses her customized mug (image_0.png) to collect morning dew or specific rainwater, which she then uses to trace over specific, intricate lines of her tattoos, humming a forgotten tune. This is how she ‘feeds’ the merged spirit.
