Two characters, a man and a woman, who appear to be seasoned, powerful barbarian warriors from a cold, northern region. Their attire and the environment strongly suggest a connection to the wild, and potentially to ancient lineages or powerful magic.
We have two distinct character concepts based on the individuals in the image. Since it isn’t specified, you can choose to play either one, or even adapt them to be a duo in your campaign. They are presented here with full mechanical builds, backstory, and hooks designed to fit seamlessly into a D&D campaign.

The Patriarch (The Man with the Greatsword)
- Name: Vorstag ‘Iceheart’ Bearclaw
- Race: Human (Variant)
- Class: Barbarian (Path of the Ancestral Guardian) / Fighter (Battle Master) Multiclass
- Background: Uthgardt Tribe Member (specifically, a custom adaptation of the Tribe Member, reflecting his leadership)
Vorstag is the embodiment of a patriarch and an oath-keeper. He is an older, weathered man whose body is a map of countless battles. The greatsword he carries is a sacred relic of his ancestors. He is a steadfast warrior, deeply connected to his tribe’s spirits.
Mechanics & Starting Stats (Standard Array):
These are recommended stats for a starting level (e.g., Level 5, reflecting his veteran status). We will assume a Barbarian 3 / Fighter 2 build to represent both his ancestral focus and his tactical skill.
- STR: 16 (+3) (Stat array 15 +1 racial)
- DEX: 14 (+2) (Stat array 14)
- CON: 16 (+3) (Stat array 13 +1 racial +1 from Resilient: CON feat)
- INT: 8 (-1) (Stat array 8)
- WIS: 12 (+1) (Stat array 12)
- CHA: 10 (+0) (Stat array 10)
Class Progression Notes:
- Barbarian 3 (Ancestral Guardian): This grants him Ancestral Protectors, which fits perfectly. When he Rages, the spirits of his clan rise up to harry and distract his foes.
- Fighter 2: This gives him a Fighting Style (Great Weapon Fighting) and Action Surge, reflecting his discipline and mastery.
- Feats:
- Variant Human Feat: Resilient (Constitution). This reinforces his toughness.
- Level 4 ASI/Feat: Great Weapon Master (a near requirement for this archetype, visually and mechanically).
Backstory: The Guardian of the Frostpeak Pass
For fifty winters, Vorstag was the champion and war-chieftain of the Bearclaw tribe, a proud Uthgardt people holding the crucial, storm-wracked pass between the lowlands and the Spine of the World. He was an honorable man, beloved by his people and feared by his enemies.
The greatsword he wields, ‘Spirit-Cleaver,’ is an ancient weapon that can only be awakened by the blood of the Bearclaw chieftains. Vorstag never sought glory; his entire adult life was dedicated to protecting his valley, his people, and the ancestral burial grounds they guarded.
The tragedy struck five years ago. A powerful frost giant warlord, seeking a specific artifact within the burial mounds, laid siege to the pass. For a week, Vorstag led his warriors, matching strength for strength. The giants were relentless. When the pass finally fell, it wasn’t due to overwhelming numbers, but a specific curse that targeted the tribe’s elderly and young.
Vorstag was forced to watch his people waste away, their spirits withering even as they stood. The greatsword, and Vorstag’s own ancestral bond, protected him, but he could not save them. When the valley was finally overrun, Vorstag was the last one standing. The giant warlord, in an act of supreme cruelty, allowed Vorstag to live, mockingly telling him that guarding a valley of ghosts was a fate worse than death.
He now travels the world as a grim, focused mercenary and adventurer. His “Ancestral Guardian” spirits are the visible, glowing spectral forms of his own lost children and warriors, who appear not to aid him so much as to ensure his survival until his oath is fulfilled.
D&D Hooks:
- Reclaiming the Pass: A powerful wizard or noble approach the party, seeking to reopen the Frostpeak Pass for a crucial trade route. To do so, they need a guide who knows the terrain perfectly, and the ancient defenses. Vorstag is that guide. The catch: the pass is now a fortress held by the Frost Giant warlord who destroyed his tribe.
- The Fading Sword: Vorstag notices that ‘Spirit-Cleaver’ has begun to crack. It is losing its power. A tribal shaman, encountered by chance, confirms that the sword is tied to the strength of his dead people’s spirits. He must travel to the lost valley and find a sacred forge to repair the blade before its ancestral line is extinguished forever.
- The Last Bearclaw: A rumor reaches Vorstag about a young child with a distinct Bearclaw birthmark, being raised in a distant city by a merchant family. Vorstag believes this might be his lost grandchild or a nephew who survived the purge. The party must investigate and, if true, protect the child from the agents of the Frost Giant warlord, who may seek to eliminate the bloodline entirely.
Roleplay Ideas:
- Paternal but Stern: He will naturally step into a protector or leader role for the party, but he is a man of few words and is deeply haunted. He does not treat adventuring lightly.
- Haunted Guidance: When you use Ancestral Protectors, describe the appearance of the spirits. “The translucent form of my daughter, holding a broken bow, appears and harries the goblin chief.” He might speak to them, often mistaking party members for his lost kin in moments of exhaustion or stress.
- The Burden of Leadership: He often questions whether he failed his people. “I was their shield. But a shield that breaks is useless, even if it is old.”
- Respect for Tradition: He respects old ways, oaths, and ancient artifacts. He is unlikely to allow the party to desecrate a grave or destroy a historical site.

The Matriarch (The Woman with the Bastard Sword)
- Name: Thyra the Frost-Eyed
- Race: Human (Standard)
- Class: Barbarian (Path of the Storm Herald: Tundra)
- Background: Outlander
Thyra is a primal force of nature. While also seasoned, she appears younger, or perhaps just less weathered by time, than Vorstag. She exudes a fierce, dynamic energy. The sword she wields is unique: it appears to be forged of a blend of fine steel and ever-melting, ever-reforming glacial ice, matching her innate elemental connection.
Mechanics & Starting Stats (Point Buy):
This build is focused on high CON and the unique benefits of the Tundra Storm Herald, making her a formidable front-line tank that protects the party. We will assume a Level 5 Barbarian.
- STR: 16 (+3) (Point Buy 15 +1 racial)
- DEX: 14 (+2) (Point Buy 14)
- CON: 18 (+4) (Point Buy 15 +1 racial +2 ASI)
- INT: 8 (-1) (Point Buy 8)
- WIS: 10 (+0) (Point Buy 10)
- CHA: 10 (+0) (Point Buy 10)
Class Notes:
- Barbarian 5 (Storm Herald – Tundra): When she Rages, she radiates a Storm Aura (Tundra). This aura provides temporary hit points to all friendly creatures within 10 feet at the start of her turn, emphasizing her role as a protective matriarch of her environment.
- Feats: Instead of the ASI at Level 4, she may have taken a feat like Shield Master (using the ice-blade defensively, even if it’s a versatile weapon) or, better yet, Tough. Let’s assume ASI for raw stats for now, as shown above.
Backstory: The Awakening of the Glacier
Thyra was never truly part of a tribe. She was born near the mouth of a massive, ancient glacier known to the few locals as “The World’s Sigh.” She was a foundling, raised by a reclusive hermit-shaman who spoke only to the elements.
From a young age, Thyra was different. She had an unyielding tolerance for the cold and a terrifying, latent rage. When she was an adolescent, the hermit revealed her truth: she was not fully human. Her ancestors had been blessed (or cursed) by an elemental entity of the Tundra, and that power was manifesting in her.
She found ‘Glacier’s Edge,’ her magical sword, frozen within the deepest, most dangerous part of the ice field. It was not waiting for a specific person; it was waiting for someone who shared its nature. When she grasped it, the ice surrounding it did not melt, but became part of her.
Her journey is one of discovery. She left her frozen homeland because the glacier began to melt abnormally fast, revealing ancient, evil things trapped beneath the ice. She seeks answers about her origins and the true purpose of the elemental power she contains, a power that both warms her heart and fills her with a chaotic, protective fury. She feels a deep kinship with all cold, wild places.

D&D Hooks:
- The Melting Glacier: A localized ‘eternal winter’ is consuming a distant region. People are dying. The party is hired to investigate. The root cause is a rift to the Elemental Plane of Ice, or perhaps a slumbering primordial. Thyra, feeling the distress of the land, joins the party, as this is precisely the kind of threat she seeks to stop.
- The Ice Witch’s Lair: A powerful Ice Hag has set up her lair nearby, and her power is spreading. She has captured several of Thyra’s friends (or perhaps some innocent travelers) and is using them as focus points for her ritual. Thyra is directly called to action by her affinity for the tundra, and the party agrees to help her storm the hag’s fortress.
- The Elemental Cult: A sinister cult, dedicating itself to a forgotten god of cold and destruction, has begun active operations. They seek to locate and destroy a powerful water elemental trapped near a major city, which would have catastrophic consequences. Their actions directly resonate with the ancient entity Thyra shares a connection with, compelling her to interfere.
Roleplay Ideas:
- Primal and Unpredictable: She is less stoic than Vorstag. Her rage is explosive and elemental. Describe her breath visibly misting when she speaks or grows angry.
- Kinship with Cold: She is at her best in cold environments. “The cold is not my enemy. It is a blanket.” She might walk barefoot through snow and express discomfort in hot climates.
- Protective Instincts: Her primary focus in combat is often protecting the party. Describe her Tundra aura: “A localized blizzard kicks up around her, the cold winds not harming her allies but solidifying their skin with a thin, flexible layer of protective rime.”
- Simple Speech: While not stupid, she has spent much of her life isolated and with a simple shaman. She might express complex ideas simply or not care for social niceties. “This place is weak. Too much warmth. We leave.”
Duet (Optional): Vorstag & Thyra
If you and a partner wish to play both, here is a framework to link them together:
Combined Backstory: The Last Two
Thyra and Vorstag were not of the same tribe, but they were allies. When the Frost Giant warlord began his invasion of the northern mountains, he systematically destroyed several tribes. Vorstag, the battle-hardened veteran, was attempting to coordinate a defense. He encountered Thyra, a wild hermit who fought like a force of nature, protecting the very glacier the giant warlord sought to exploit.
They fought side-by-side during the final, doomed siege of Vorstag’s pass. It was during this battle that their deep respect was forged, and they became the only two survivors. Now, they are bounded by mutual loss, their distinct paths of vengeance and preservation intertwining as they navigate the unknown world together. They function as a unit: the steadfast rock and the dynamic storm.
