Arngrim, the Ghost-Cutter – Human (Variant)

This character’s appearance strongly suggests a direct, physical presence. I will develop him as a Barbarian, focusing on his strength and connection to the wilderness, while using his specific gear (the curved blade, the tattoos, and the heavy leather) to create a unique backstory.

Character Backstory: Arngrim, the Ghost-Cutter

Core Concept: A disgraced highlander outcast from the Frostpeak Range who hunts spirits and sorcerers to regain his honor, wielding a cursed blade designed to sever non-corporeal form. He now travels as a mercenary, seeking atonement or a glorious death.

Part 1: The Character Mechanics

  • Race: Human (Variant)
  • Variant Human Feat: Slasher (+1 STR, once per turn when hitting with a slashing weapon, reduce movement by 10ft; a critical hit gives disadvantage to target attack rolls). This maximizes the threat of that heavy curved blade.
  • Class: Barbarian (Path of the Ancestral Guardian)
  • Background: Outlander (specifically Exile/Outcast)
  • Alignment: Chaotic Neutral (shifting toward Good)
  • Size: Medium

Part 2: The Narrative Backstory

Origins: The Frostpeak Sentinels

Arngrim was a captain of the Frostpeak Sentinels, a mountain tribe whose ancient code demanded they guard the high passes against spirits and unnatural beasts. Arngrim was legendary for his skill with the ‘Icecutter,’ the massive, curved runic greatsword (which he is holding in image_0.png). He was considered destined to lead. He wore the tribe’s ritual scars and tattoos, celebrating victories over shadow mantles and remorhaz.

The Fall and the Exile

The tribe’s downfall began when a corrupt warlock, Malakor, arrived in the valleys below. Malakor used foul magic to binding the spirits of dead warriors (Arngrim’s kin) into a ghostly army. The tribe’s elders, fearing total annihilation, decreed a desperate ritual: a chosen champion would have their soul anchored to the Icecutter blade, allowing them to fight the spirits directly.

Arngrim, despite being a captain, was not chosen. Instead, the honor fell to his younger brother, Thrain. When the ritual was complete, Thrain challenged Malakor but was overwhelmed and trapped within his own spectral chains. He was forced to turn his new spiritual power against his own people.

Arngrim, consumed by a cocktail of jealousy and rage, could not stand the sight of his brother being tortured in spirit form. Against direct orders, he broke into the ritual chamber, seized the still-cursed Icecutter, and confronted his brother. Arngrim fought with the ancestral fury the blade now contained, tearing through the warlock’s army. He reached his brother, but the warlock used Thrain as a magical shield. Arngrim’s fatal mistake was not missing; it was hitting Thrain directly with the weapon that his own soul was tethered to.

The blade held. It severed Thrain’s spectral form, destroying his anchored essence and freeing his soul, but also severing the sacred magical link between the tribe and their spirit ancestors. This ‘Ghost-Cutting’ act was viewed by the elders not as mercy, but as a blasphemy that doomed the entire tribe by blinding their spiritual sight.

The Wanderer (Present Day)

Arngrim was stripped of his armor (he now wears the crude harness visible in image_0.png), branded, and exiled. He was left with nothing but his shame and the accursed Icecutter, which still radiates cold from the ritual. The warlock escaped, and his whereabouts are unknown. Arngrim believes his only salvation is to hunt down and kill Malakor, hoping the act will restore the spiritual balance or, at the very least, grant him a warrior’s death in atonement.

He now sells his sword to caravans, but his eyes are always fixed on rumors of necromancy or spiritual disruption. He is a ‘Ghost-Cutter,’ a barbarian whose rage is specifically directed at formless threats.

Part 3: Hooks and Motivation for the Campaign

  1. The Main Quest (Malakor’s Shadow): Arngrim’s primary motivation is to find the warlock Malakor. Every town is a lead, every monster sighting a potential connection. If the campaign’s villain is a magic user, Arngrim is instantly invested. The DM can use this by having Malakor appear (even as an antagonist) or by having cultists/allies of the warlock operating in the campaign area.
  2. The Call of the Spirits: Although he cannot connect to his ancestors, his ‘Ancestral Guardian’ feature manifests as a curse. The spirits he severed (including glimpses of his brother) don’t assist him; they manifest as tormentors when he rages, distracting his enemies to distract themselves from their own pain. He seeks any way to quiet them or make amends. The DM can introduce spirits, fey, or old temples that react strongly (positively or negatively) to Arngrim’s presence and weapon.
  3. The Broken Blade: The Icecutter’s runic script is fractured. He is driven to repair it, believing its full power (and his lost honor) is tied to the complete script. This provides a quest objective for finding rare materials, arcane smiths, or ancient knowledge.

Part 4: Roleplay Ideas

  • Stoic but Volatile: Arngrim rarely speaks. He prefers action. But his temper is a hair-trigger, especially regarding magic users or threats to those smaller than him (the memory of his brother).
  • The Weight of the Past: He should look the part image_0.png: severe, muscular, and carrying heavy equipment that looks slightly too brutal for refined society. He smells faintly of frost and woodsmoke.
  • Superstitious: Despite being a barbarian, he is deeply, logically superstitious. He doesn’t trust bridges built by magic; he pays respects to roadside shrines; he spits when a black raven circles three times. He believes magic is the path to damnation.
  • Combat Dialogue: When he rages, don’t just say “I rage.” Roleplay it. “The spirits of my sin cry out, Malakor! Your blood will quiet them!”
  • The ‘Ancestral Guardian’ Flavor: In combat, when his features activate to impose disadvantage, describe it visually as flickering, cold, transparent figures that briefly scream or latch onto the enemy. “A pale, transparent spectral hand (his brother’s) appears and grabs the foe’s arm, turning their blow. They glare at Arngrim with sorrow.”
