I was watching YouTube the other evening… There was a documentary on Austin City Limits that I really enjoyed… Austin City Limits: A Song for You (1080p) FULL MOVIE – Documentary, Live Music, History.

After the show was over I wandered thru the recommended videos and came across the following video… and while the story was wonderful, it was the song that grabbed my imagination… and made me think of the image above that hangs on the wall by my front door…

The Best Job I Ever Had

“The Best Job I Ever Had” written by Guy Clark – Published by EMI April Music Inc. (ASCAP) and Mike Plume – Published by Bash Music/Administered by Bluewater Music Corp. (SOCAN/ASCAP)

After you listen to the song… Go back and listen to the back story.

Dad’s Guitar

Horace Boyd -1921-1996

That led me to wander thru my memories…

Growing up, one of my most treasured memories of my father, was of him and his guitar… There is even a photograph of him sitting in the kitchen playing… I can see it even now. Dad has been gone a long time now… Twenty-six years… Over a quarter of a century… And still I see him with that guitar…

Then… here’s another Guy Clark story in a song…

You know, it’s a funny thing… Almost all of my life I’ve known about Guy Clark. But these last few years I’ve really “heard” his songs for pretty much the first time… If you understand what I mean.

Christ, I had friends in Austin in the early ’70’s as “Outlaw Country” became a thing. I first heard of Luckenbach back when Willie discovered it before the song… Back when it was just a few hippies sitting out under the oak trees in the Hill Country listening to the Red Headed Stranger… Back before Willie had the hair…

But, like most things… You don’t know what ya got until it’s gone. And now that Guy is gone, I find myself visiting his songs/stories more and more… RIP Guy Clark.
