Eliza Carthy
I’m spending a lot of time in my music library these days. As songs process through the que I find myself wondering where I acquired them… Even what path led me to the artist… When I heard one of Eliza Carthy’s songs start playing her voice struck a cord with me. When I looked down her name was familiar… why? where from?
Looking into my files I see I have one of her albums from 2000, Angels & Cigarettes. I came across something of her’s that caused me to put that album on my Christmas wish list back around 2006 or 2007. Someone back then gifted me with the cd.
While listening to my music library these days I find myself googling and YouTube-ing groups and artists constantly… That’s what happened when Perfect starting playing. So now I know more about Eliza than I probably ever did before.
Eliza Carthy, MBE (born 23 August 1975) is an English folk musician known for both singing and playing the fiddle. She is the daughter of English folk musicians singer/guitarist Martin Carthy and singer Norma Waterson.
Eliza Carthy – Wikipedia
Describing herself simply as a “modern English musician”, Eliza Carthy is one of the most recognisable faces in British folk. Born into a formidable musical dynasty, her mother Norma was one of The Watersons (whose tight harmony arrangements of traditional songs became one of the defining sounds of the 1960s folk revival) and her father Martin Carthy is a hugely influential singer and guitarist. Making music with her family has been a constant throughout her life, beginning when she joined The Waterdaughters at the age of 13 and continuing to this day. In recent years, she has released the award-winning album The Moral of the Elephant (2014) with her father, as well as Gift (2010) and Anchor (2018) with The Gift Band, a loose collective featuring many members of her extended family. She has also curated NormaFest, an annual celebration of her mother’s continuing contribution to the folk tradition.
