It’s 10:00 a.m. and 38° outside. The one result surviving the rolling blackouts is that we’re sleeping later each morning. I can’t go on for long, school will start again on Monday. But even going to bed at a normal time finds us dragging out of bed at a non-normal late time.
Between the pandemic and the frozen nature of the Texas electrical grid, life and isolation has been one long boring stretch. Luckily, having a gas range to cook on did keep us in a hot food throughout the darkness. Judging by the lines that stretch forever down the roads heading into fast food joints, hot food is a luxury people will sit in their cars for.
I started to stop at the Home Depot yesterday afternoon but when I walked in and saw the checkout line stretching all the way across the store I decided I really didn’t need to look for anything after all. I did manage to find a gas station with gas yesterday. Though people were lined up to get into the local HEB. My son told me they had shopped on Wednesday using their cell phones as flashlights at the local Kroger.
I only hope that this event doesn’t fade from everyone’s attention too quickly. The politicians need to be held accountable for setting this up. If my fellow citizens can’t keep that in the foreground of their minds, we really have a problem.
And how about Senator Cruz? Flying off to Cancun during the middle of this crisis. It’s really about what I would expect from our junior senator. I noticed he flew back alone yesterday afternoon. You left his family in Mexico. Must be nice.
Well I have to get breakfast going. And I need another cup of coffee. So, y’all stay safe, stay healthy, stay warm, and pray for the nation and the world and each other.
Have a glorious day in America the not so exceptional.
