Another almost cool morning for high summer. Dew rests heavy on the cars, and dewdrops glisten in the grass. But, strangely, the eyeglasses didn’t fog up when I came outside.
The first sound that registered today was the call of a pileated woodpecker above my head. That loud prehistoric sound always makes me smile. One thing I’ve missed out here is the whistling ducks. It’s been a few weeks now since I’ve observed them.
But, as always, the hummingbirds are acting all teenage boys and bumping chests over who controls the access to the feeder.
The weather prognosticators are all giddy over the two tropical systems heading for the gulf at one time. It seems they can hardly wait to make history for the first time since the great depression. It’s almost like they’re jealous of the epidemiologists and the economist for their once in a hundred year disasters and they want one of their own…

Honestly? I think a lot of people are just happy to have something new to talk about — something that’s not a virus or politics or whatever. I have laughed at the number of sudden experts on the Fujiwara effect that have popped up on social media. A lot of the weather trolls are hoping for a dramatic disaster, when in fact the effect often brings a lessening of intensity in both storms. Well, onward!
We can only hope. I really don’t look forward to a weather disaster in August in a pandemic.
That said, it’s a good thing the Republicans aren’t holding a big gathering in Jacksonville next week.
