Yesterday I was in East Bernard to say my goodbyes to Sissy. It was a nice service.
Once I left for home I decided to take a side trip thru Orchard where both Sissy and my mom grew up. My grandparents left Orchard in 1971 to move to south Texas and sold their old home place. Sometimes during the late seventies or early eighties the folks that bought the place had the house moved across town, and built a new one on the property. The photo above is the old Sewell home. It’s looking pretty good after all these years.
Driving around Orchard I saw quite a few new houses being built. It looks like the city is finally catching up to the little country town I spent my summers in. Though the road the old house was on is still mostly pastures and crop fields.
It’ll just be a few weeks and I’ll be back in East Bernard. This time to celebrate a family. It’ll be the 60th time the family of James Pleas and Sally Cox Boyd have officially held a reunion. Depending on the turnout it could be the last.
Here’s the view from the front porch this morning…
That old house looks lovely. That’s the sort of house that appeals to me: comfortable, rather than big and grand and overbuilt. It fits into its environment very nicely.
It was always a great place to visit growing up. In that day and in it’s original setting it was surrounded by large, climbable shade trees. A really great place to build childhood memories.
