Wandering the web on a Sunday afternoon…

For many years back in the late 1980′s and into the early 1990′ I spent way more time than I should have exploring fractal images. On Friday GreenmanTim over at Walking the Berkshires posted an image from The Fractal Bargain Bin that brought all of those hours tumbling back on me.

I don’t claim that any of the images I created back then had any of the artistic flair that these creations of Sven Geier of JPL. As a mater of fact almost everting I every created way back then has bit the dust due to the vagrancies of computer systems and storage media over the ensuing decade(s).

If these images say anything at all to you, take a run over to The Fractal Bargain Bin and check out the yearly galleries…I think I’m going to start wasting some more time following the muse into the hearts of fractals again for awhile…

Since his recent trip into Kentucky Fred First has been on a crusade to help stop mountaintop removal. His latest post has links to send your Congressman an email. If ya love the mountains…send a message.

End Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining | Fragments From Floyd

What can Congress do to stop mountaintop removal? The Clean Water Act was enacted by Congress to “restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nation’s waters,” and prohibited the dumping of material into waterways for the purpose of waste disposal. In 2002, the Secretary of the Army changed the definition of “fill material” in order to include mining waste. Since debris from mountaintop removal is no longer considered “waste,” coal companies are dumping millions of tons of mine waste into streams.

  • I think I’m just going to post a daily link to your blog and call it my post for the day — everything you write rings a bell with me. I can’t count the hours I’ve spent fooling with a fractal program (not understanding one teensy bit of the math) — the images you linked to are fabulous (thanks!)

Congrats on getting back to work — I wish you a continuing positive outlook and good health.
