“Just as the highest and the lowest notes are equally inaudible, so perhaps, is the greatest sense and the greatest nonsense equally unintelligible.”
– Alan Watts

I find that quote both disturbing and dishearteningly astute. It is disturbing mainly because if the greatest nonsense is unintelligible, how bad must it be judging by the nonsense we hear on a daily basis? Disheartening in the sense that we will never hear the best of the best due to our own inability to listen…Could it be that by training ourselves to hear outside the norms at both ends of the spectrum we will raise our hopes? Or will we just be unable to tell which end of the spectrum we are hearing?

I find myself wondering what’s next as another year in my life comes to a close. I feel like I’m marking time…tick, tick, tick…waiting for the next beginning. I am being bribed to continue on…just a bit longer…don’t jump yet…hang in there…each year in the old life is a bit more in the larder for the new. At some point though, it has to end so the next phase can begin. 2010 was the plan, but I am beginning to wonder if half way through 2008 might not be a better place to switch trains on this track of my life.

I feel the call of the higher places stronger all the time…
