As I sit here this morning, before sunrise, thinking back on the past decade. I keep finding myself despising the contractor who organized the construction of the mess our country has become.
And though he loves to envision himself as a builder, I’m not thinking about the pResident. No my thoughts are on Mitch McConnell. Without the Senator from Kentucky I don’t think we would find ourselves in this spot of historically un-American, un-Democratic, fascist autocracy.
Mitch McConnell, who stacked the Supreme Court. Mitch McConnell who famously said during the impeachment trial of Donald J Trump, that it should be left up to the courts to decide the outcome of American Democracy. Mitch McConnell who dealt the hand we are all trying to live through.
So as I watch the invasion of American cities by armed thugs, listen to the hate filled rhetoric of the Steven Miller’s of the world, the disrespectful disregard for the rule of law and the constitution shown by everyone now in the administration… I think about Mitch McConnell.
My whole life America has been on a forward leaning trajectory. Granted, we’ve had periods of backsliding, periods of regression, periods of Republican Administrations, periods of Republican majorities in Congress. But, up until Mitch McConnell the balance was walked, the beam was wide enough to maintain a balance.
Now the balance has been lost. The rules are being ignored or completely broken. The norms aren’t normal anymore. And the Republican Majority, it’s useless when it comes to maintaining it’s constitutional role as a check and balance to the other two legs of our government.
We’ve had a long run… 250 years this summer. The question is… Will we make 251?
I pray I’m just being pessimistic. But my life has been spent optimistically. And I would love to spend the rest of it feeling like America was on the path that would keep it the land of the free and home of the brave. But, we the people are feeling more and more oppressed, more and more we are feeling the overbearing thumb of oppression.
So, I hope your Presidents Day is more pleasant than mine has started out.
Stay Safe, Stay Healthy,
