Garrison tells us that…
Tonight is Midsummer Night’s Eve, also called St. John’s Eve. St. John is the patron saint of beekeepers. It’s a time when the hives are full of honey. The full moon that occurs this month was called the Mead Moon, because honey was fermented to make mead. That’s where the word “honeymoon” comes from.
It’s a time for lovers. An old Swedish proverb says, “Midsummer Night is not long but it sets many cradles rocking.” Midsummer dew was said to have special healing powers. Women washed their faces in it to make themselves beautiful and young.
I’ve mentioned Burr Morse’s News From Vermont before, but I do so love the way he strings words together to paint a mind picture. His latest offering is much appreciated.
Suspecting at an early age that I was different, I made a conscious decision to go toward music, figuring if I couldn’t keep it all in the family I could at least keep it all on the right side of the brain. One day the Ellis Music Company guy came to my forth grade class and, in the mad rush of unbuckling cases and parceling out, I suppose, what needed to be sold that day, I ended up with a trombone. Although I’ve tried every trick in the method book to quit since then, destiny has led this self conscious admirer of cow manure, to be a life-long trombone player. I’ve spent that tenure seeking out God’s most beautiful piece of music, one that would rival a quadruple row of Foxgloves, lightly sprinkled with pink and white Peonies.
If you haven’t wandered over to the Morse Farm and checked out the samples of Burr’s musings, you should. Sign up for his semi-regular ramblings, you’ll enjoy the change of pace…
I had quite a backlog of email this morning. I’ve been spending some free time these last few days reading a book in Microsoft’s Reader program. I really like the program as it allows me to carry a really large library around in a usb hard drive. Lots of SciFi and older novels.
The wife is saying it’s time to start moving so I guess it’s catch ya later time…Funny thing is it still looks like dawn outside. That doesn’t bode well for outdoor activities for the day…
