This has to be one of the strangest things about Texas Republicans…
When health care in Texas makes headlines, the issues raised by administrators and physicians are hardly rosy. They include overcrowded emergency rooms, mounting hospital budget deficits created by unfunded indigent care, and uninsured rates for adults and children that lead the nation.
In fact, a recent study by the Commonwealth Fund found that Texas ranks next to last in the nation in children’s access to health care. About 22 percent of Texas youngsters — nearly 1.5 million — have no health insurance protection at all. Houston has 1.1 million uninsured people — fully a third of the population.
However, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, has an upbeat perception of the quality of Lone Star medical care. As reported by the Chronicle’s Alan Bernstein, Cornyn told the Greater Houston Pachyderm Club that legislation limiting damage awards in malpractice cases had created greater access to quality health care in Texas, encouraging more doctors to practice here.
“So, you have to understand what I mean when I say I want to make Washington, D.C., and the rest of our country more like Texas (because), frankly, we know the policies that actually work.”

And how does a man who wants to lower expectations around the country to match those in Texas get elected? Is it just me, or does it seem strange that no matter what is happening our Republican “Leaders” think everything is just fine?
